Classic Design Firm Gets Into Blockchain

There are all sorts of corporations and companies that are more interested in blockchain technology than ever. It certainly appears as though many influential and powerful figures in the tech world believe in the potential of blockchain, regardless of whatever the cryptocurrency markets are doing.

In an interesting pivot, the same design firm that created the first Apple mouse is actually looking to invest in blockchain startups of all kinds. For those that are unaware, that company is Ideo, which was founded in 1991 in Palo Alto, California. The firm has worked with some of the largest and most well-known companies in the world since its inception.

About IDEO

One of the most interesting things about IDEO is its versatility. Ideo, unlike many other design firms based in Silicon Valley, has not simply limited themselves to the tech sector. They have designed products for all sorts of industries, including tech, retail, food and beverage, toys, and the automotive industry as well.

The company is international, and has offices in various countries. Some of the cities that IDEO has offices in include Chicago, London, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Munich.

A New Direction

The firm has even set up a venture capital fund specifically to invest in blockchain startups, although it hasn’t been forthcoming about details. It is believed that Ideo is interested to see how blockchain will reinvent the concept of “messaging” and the creation of decentralized marketplaces. Some of the companies that IDEO has already invested in include Freelance Labs, a decentralized marketplace for the gig economy, and Rare Bits, a wallet for digital assets.

The company isn’t focused on cryptocurrency prices as much as long-term possibility. Joe Gerber, a managing director at IDEO’s CoLab project, stated that too many are “overly fixated” on cryptocurrency prices. He elaborated: “We think design and adoption will be the next phase in this technology evolution.”
